Best overall windows

Late May–June Best value + weather

Warm sea (around 18–22°C), long sunny days, full ferry schedules and far smaller crowds than midsummer. May is the golden month; June is early high season but still pre-peak on price.

September–early October Mellow shoulder

The sea stays warm (around 20–23°C in September), crowds thin out and prices drop sharply after August. Istria's white-truffle season starts in October. Outstanding value.

July–August (peak)

Hottest weather (28–33°C) and the warmest sea (24–26°C), but maximum crowds and prices — Dubrovnik can be +50%. Book accommodation and ferries well ahead.

Planning notes by region

  • Dalmatian coast (Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, islands) — the classic summer destination. Ferries ramp up from May and run full schedules June–September. Dubrovnik and Hvar are busiest and priciest; many island businesses close November–March.
  • Istria (Rovinj, Pula, Poreč) — a touch cooler and greener than the south, brilliant in late spring and early autumn. October brings white-truffle season around Motovun and Buzet.
  • Kvarner (Opatija, Rijeka, Krk, Rab) — sheltered bays and a mild microclimate; good shoulder-season value with easy access from the north.
  • Zagreb & interior — a year-round city; winter works thanks to the award-winning Advent Christmas markets. Summers are warm but inland.
  • National parks (Plitvice, Krka) — Plitvice is superb in spring (April–May) when waterfalls run high and crowds are thinner; autumn colours are beautiful too. Summer is busy; arrive early.
