How ferries work in Croatia
Split is the main hub for the islands, with the densest network of sailings — in peak season there can be up to around 18 daily connections to Hvar, plus regular services to Brač (Bol), Korčula and Vis. From the south, Dubrovnik connects to Korčula, Mljet and the Elaphiti islands.
There are two kinds of service. Car ferries (operated by Jadrolinija) carry vehicles and passengers but are slower. Fast catamarans — Jadrolinija's own catamarans plus Krilo / Kapetan Luka — are quicker but foot-passenger only: you cannot take a car. A useful coastal catamaran line links the south: Split – Bol (Brač) – Hvar – Korčula – Mljet – Dubrovnik.
If you have a car, plan around the car ferries (and consider leaving the car on the mainland for short island stays). If you are travelling on foot, the fast catamarans are usually the best way to chain islands together. Book ahead in July–August via jadrolinija.hr and krilo.hr — popular sailings sell out.
