Croatia in May
Is May a good time to visit Croatia?
May is widely considered Croatia's best month. Temperatures reach 20–24°C, sea temperatures warm to 18–19°C, everything is open, crowds are manageable and prices are 20–30% below the August peak. Plitvice Lakes are at maximum waterfall volume.
Why experienced travellers choose May
There is a category of Croatia traveller — the person who has done this before, who has been to Dubrovnik in August and Split in September and Plitvice in June — who, when asked when to go back, says May without hesitating.
May sits in a specific sweet spot that makes it genuinely hard to argue against. Everything is open and running. The coast is green and vivid. The ferries are on full schedules. The crowds have not arrived. And you are paying significantly less than you would in July for an equivalent experience.
The trade-off is a sea that is a couple of degrees colder than you might like. If swimming is your primary activity, June or September serves you better. If you want to actually enjoy the places you came to see — walk the city walls without queuing, get a table at a good restaurant without planning a week ahead, stand at Plitvice’s viewpoints with a clear shot — May is arguably the best month in Croatia.
Weather in May
Dalmatian coast (Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar, Zadar):
- Daytime: 20–24°C
- Evenings: 14–17°C (bring a light jacket)
- Sea temperature: 17–19°C (warming to ~19°C by late May)
- Sunshine: 8–9 hours per day on average
- Rainfall: Moderate; short afternoon showers are possible but prolonged rain is uncommon. Wetter than June or July.
- Sunset: Around 8.00–8.30pm by end of May
Istria (Rovinj, Pula, Poreč):
- Daytime: 19–22°C
- Sea temperature: 16–18°C (slightly cooler than Dalmatia)
- Similar pattern: mostly sunny, brief showers possible
Zagreb and interior:
- Daytime: 17–22°C
- More variable than the coast; rain more likely
- Beautiful in the parks and gardens; café terraces begin filling
Plitvice area (600–800m altitude):
- Daytime: 14–18°C
- Cooler than the coast; bring a layer for mornings
What is actually open in May
A common concern is whether facilities are running in May. Here is the practical picture:
From the second week of May onwards:
- All major hotels, apartments and guesthouses on the Dalmatian coast are open
- Restaurants along the main tourist routes are operating
- Jadrolinija car ferries and passenger catamarans run close to full summer timetables from mid-May
- Tour operators (boat trips, kayaking, Blue Cave excursions, Plitvice day trips) are fully operational
- Beaches are accessible; beach bars and sunbed rentals begin operating on popular beaches from mid-May
First week of May:
- Most things are open; some smaller island businesses (particularly on Vis, Mljet and outer islands) are still starting up
- Some catamaran routes operate reduced timetables until mid-May
Zagreb and inland Croatia: Fully operational year-round; May is peak spring.
Plitvice Lakes in May: the highlight
If there is one activity that May optimises for above all others, it is a visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Why May is special at Plitvice: The snowmelt from the Mala and Vela Kapela mountains (which feed the park’s lake system via underground springs and surface rivers) is at maximum intensity in May. The waterfalls — particularly the Veliki Slap (Croatia’s highest waterfall) and the Great Cascade — thunder with a volume that June and certainly July cannot match. The colour of the water, a vivid turquoise-green in spring, is particularly intense.
Practical advantage: In May, you can book Plitvice tickets without the fierce competition of summer. The park does enforce daily entry caps, and online booking is still recommended (np-plitvicka-jezera.hr), but tickets for a specific May date are available without the months-ahead planning needed in July.
Temperature at Plitvice: At 600–800m altitude, the park is noticeably cooler than the coast — typically 14–18°C in May. Wear layers; the morning boardwalk can be cool and damp.
A day trip from Split to Plitvice is a popular May itinerary — roughly 2.5 hours each way; leave early to arrive at opening.
Island hopping in May
Island hopping in May is one of the genuine pleasures of the month. The ferry network is operational, you can be spontaneous about decisions (no need to book car ferry slots weeks ahead), and the islands have their character rather than their capacity.
Hvar in May is beautiful — the lavender is beginning to bloom (peak lavender is typically mid-June), the harbour is active without being overwhelmed, and the old town streets are navigable. The beach bars on the Pakleni Islands are opening or open. Swimming at 18–19°C is possible; sunbathing on the pebble beaches in the afternoon warmth is very pleasant.
Brač — Zlatni Rat beach is accessible and much less crowded than summer. The Stina Winery and Supetar old town are good May itinerary additions.
Vis — one of Croatia’s most beautiful islands, Vis is at its best before the summer crowds arrive. The fishing village of Komiža and the Biševo Blue Cave excursions start running from May.
Korčula — the medieval old town is excellent in May; the Moreška sword dance performances start their regular run. Marco Polo’s supposed birthplace has a mythic quality on a quiet May afternoon.
The Blue Cave excursions from Split run from May; it is worth booking ahead as the smaller boats fill up.
Hiking and outdoor activities in May
May is Croatia’s prime hiking month for the coast and islands. The sun is not yet at its summer intensity, the trails are green and flowered, and the views — particularly from elevated coastal paths — are extraordinary in the clear spring light.
Biokovo Mountain (Makarska Riviera): The Biokovo Skywalk and the higher trails offer views across the islands from above 1,200m. May conditions — snow cleared from higher elevations, trails dry and accessible — are ideal.
Paklenica National Park: Croatia’s finest mountain hiking destination, near Zadar. The limestone gorges and canyon paths are at their best in May.
Coastal paths: Most major Dalmatian towns have marked walking paths along the seafront; many extend into the hillsides above town. The path from Cavtat around the peninsula is a May classic.
Cycling in Istria: May is the prime cycling month for Istria’s inland hill roads. The area around Motovun and Grožnjan in particular attracts road cyclists; the combination of hilly vineyards, truffle forests and hill towns is exceptional.
May in Istria
Istria deserves particular mention as a May destination because it suits the month especially well.
Rovinj — the fishing town on the western Istrian coast — is at its most photogenic in May, before summer concentrations arrive. The terracotta-roofed old town on its peninsula, the boat-filled harbour and the surrounding green hillsides are a fine combination.
Pula with its Roman amphitheatre (one of the best-preserved in the world) is easier to visit in May — no summer queues, fair ticket availability, and the arena itself takes on a different character when it is not hosting summer concerts.
Truffle hunt excursions: While the high season for Istrian truffles is autumn (white truffles from September, black truffles from January), black truffle forays run year-round, including in May. A truffle hunting experience near Motovun — in the oak forests with the truffle dog — is a memorable Istrian activity.
Prices in May
May accommodation prices on the coast are typically 20–30% below August peaks. In practical terms:
- A sea-view apartment in Split that runs €150/night in August might be available for €95–110 in May
- A Dubrovnik hotel room that costs €250 in August may be €150–180 in May
- Car rental is cheaper and more available
- Restaurant prices are the same year-round; the saving is purely in accommodation and transport

Practical May planning
What to pack: Light daytime layers (t-shirt + light shirt or jumper), a jacket for evenings, walking shoes with grip for coastal paths and Plitvice boardwalks, a rain jacket (brief showers are possible). Swimwear — the sea is swimmable from mid-May and sunbathing is perfectly possible in 22–24°C air.
Ferry booking: For most routes, same-day or next-day booking is fine. If you are planning to take a car on a popular route (Split–Hvar) on a specific date, book a few days ahead as a precaution, but the June–August panic-booking dynamic does not apply in May.
Plitvice tickets: Book online in advance (2–4 weeks is fine for May). The park does not enforce entry caps as strictly as in summer, but online booking ensures entry at your preferred time.
Restaurants: Walk-in is generally fine for May. Reserve ahead for special-occasion meals at top-tier restaurants in Dubrovnik or Hvar; otherwise, no advance planning needed.
